Robotic Concrete Printing by Studio RAP

Studio RAP developed a 3d-printer for architectural concrete in collaboration with concrete manufacturer Bruil. The combination of custom hardware and software will enable a whole new range of possibilities for architects in terms of shape, colour and texture. Studio RAP and Bruil expect to start production on a large scale within two years.

3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing is a peer-reviewed journal that provides a forum for world-class research in additive manufacturing and related technologies. The Journal explores emerging challenges and opportunities ranging from new developments of processes and materials, to new simulation and design tools, and informative applications and case studies. Novel applications in new areas, such as medicine, education, bio-printing, food printing, art and architecture, are also encouraged.

AM Envelope. The potential of Additive Manufacturing for facade constructions

This dissertation shows the potential of Additive Manufacturing (AM) for the development of building envelopes: AM will change the way of designing facades, how we engineer and produce them. To achieve today’s demands from those future envelopes, we have to find new solutions.

New technologies offer one possible way to do so. They open new approaches in designing, producing and processing building construction and facades. Finding the one capable of having big impact is difficult – Additive Manufacturing is one possible answer.

The term ‘AM Envelope’ (Additive Manufacturing Envelope) describes the transfer of this technology to the building envelope. Additive Fabrication is a building block that aids in developing the building envelope from a mere space enclosure to a dynamic building envelope.

Real Additive Manufacturing 2015

Additive Manufacturing (AM) is referred to as a very promissing technique, but what are the important functions and characteristics of produced building components. Can additive manufactured elements already be implemented widely in the building industry, or should the performance be improved first?

This Think Tank will focus on the implementation of AM in the building industry, trying to answer questions regarding durability, (anisotropic) material behaviour and what kind of materials can be used. Can different materials be combined in an AM production process, or are ‘new’ materials with matching production techniques desired is a question that will arise, but there are more challanges. During the discussion we want to invite you to be creative and think about the application of AM, but regulation is also a topic. How does AM fit in the building industry’s standards and legislation?
